How are you using the skills that you learned at Moody in your current position?

Top-notch research, writing, and interpersonal skills are paramount in any position. I constantly use those skills when communicating with my team, preparing deliverables for my client, the State of Wisconsin, and networking within the company.More broadly, how communication students view business challenges compared to others provides a diversity of thought and ideas valuable to employers.

Were there any words of wisdom from professors that you use at your job today?

The best words of wisdom I received from a professor were, “It is just as important to be a good teammate as it is to produce good deliverables.”

What advice do you have for #TEXASMoody students?

A piece of advice for #TEXASMoody students is to learn what makes you, YOU! Discovering what is important to you allows you to make priorities, set boundaries, and find work worth doing, which creates a positive effect on your professional and personal life. On a more technical note, I suggest using the career center and all the tools offered by Moody and the University. Also, always write thank you notes - they go a long way!

What do you miss most about Moody College?

I miss the time to explore subjects and hobbies that pique my interest. During your first job, you constantly absorb information about the company, the client, and your career, which can be tiring. So, I miss the ability to browse the PCL for a good book or enroll in a Moody course for fun, like Fashion and PR. I also dearly miss the friends I made at Moody, but one of the most rewarding things is seeing them happy and thriving in their newfound careers.

Discovering what is important to you allows you to make priorities, set boundaries, and find work worth doing, which creates a positive effect on your professional and personal life.

Can you talk about your career path?

I understood stellar communication and interpersonal skills would allow me to work in any industry, but I have always liked politics and government. Through three internships and serving on various student councils, I realized my work and leadership abilities excelled when I felt a greater sense of purpose and service. During my senior year, I was ecstatic to learn that Deloitte had an opening for a position that combined my passions for service, government, and marketing, and the rest is history!

What kind of clients will you be working with within your industry and how is PR relevant?

Within the government and public services industry, we work with clients who impact millions of Americans every day. Sectors include the state and local government, health and human services, higher education, and defense and security. Some notable clients within this group are NASA, CDC, and USPS. PR is relevant because these clients disseminate technical and vital information to Americans. These organizations must maintain trust to be able to operate efficiently and effectively.

What classes/professors helped the most?

Foundations of Marketing was the class that taught me the most information relevant to my career. Integrated Communication Management was pivotal in fine-tuning my writing skills. Other courses such as Classical Mythology, Spanish I/II, and Introduction to Communication Disorders encouraged me to challenge my viewpoints and think differently.
